Jinan University is a comprehensive university accredited by the Ministry of Education. It is jointly supported and built by the Shandong Provincial and Jinan Municipal Governments. Its enrollment is made up of students from throughout China. Jinan University provides undergraduate and graduate education, approved by the Degree Commission of State Council.
          
Jinan University has observed rigorous scientific management systems since it was founded in 1948. More than 60,000 graduate and undergraduate students have graduated from the university. Song Jian, former Vice-Chairman of the CPPCC, President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, academician of the Chinese Academy of Science, is one of the outstanding graduate representatives of Jinan University.

Jinan University has two campuses covering 2231 mu ( 148.7 hectares ). In addition, it  has an Adult Education College. The campus has future construction areas amounting to 700,000 square meters. There are also large green areas that have been entitled, “Clean and Neat Campus.” Currently there are 18 schools, two educational centers, and 54 undergraduate programs. Furthermore, Jinan University is authorized to confer master degrees for 18 graduate specialties. In addition, there are five research and engineering centers belonging to key disciplines recognized by the provincial and ministry level. The full-time student enrollment is 23,500 with an additional 11,000 students at the adult education center.

Jinan University has a distinguished faculty and staff. Seventeen have been granted the government allowance by the State Council for “Talented Personnel of China.” Thirteen faculty members have held provincial and ministry leadership roles in their professional organization. It has 2,100 full-time faculty and staff with 138 professors, and 540 associate professors, 450 hold doctorates and master degrees.

Jinan University has first-class teaching and experimental facilities: a computer center with network, audio-visual center, multi-media teaching buildings, and a 60,000 square meters library. The library contains 1.7 million volumes and 3,200 kinds of journals in Chinese and foreign languages. Furthermore, it houses a philological searching system with electronic reading room. The UJNnet, the campus computer system, is on the forefront in China. It is connected with CERNET, the China Education and Research Network. Fixed assets amount to 550 million yuan (RMB) and teaching and research equipment worth 140 million yuan (RMB).

Jinan University emphasizes scientific and academic research with 32 institutes and centers. In recent years, the university has successively undertaken 300 items of scientific research, of which 34 teaching and more than 100 scientific research accomplishments have been noted provincially, nationally, and by the ministry, including: “ The National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863 Program) ”, “ National Program of 973 ”, “ National Natural Science Foundation ”, “ Foundation of Social Science”, “ Key Projects of National Science and Technology ”. Today, 14 faculty members have won the national “ Zen Xianzi Education Foundation Prize”.

Jinan University attaches great importance to ties and cooperation with counterparts in foreign countries. It has established sister-school relationship with universities in the United States, Russia, France, England, Germany, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Pakistan. Over 100 well-known overseas experts have been engaged as guest and part-time professors of Jinan University.

In the tenth “Five-Year-Plan”, Jinan University will invest 900 million yuan (RMB) into the infrastructure of new campuses, which cover 1,062 mu ( 70.8 hectares ). The newly expanded campus construction areas will cover 410,000 square meters.
