Hohai University is one the key universities in China, a comprehensive university with emphasis laid on engineering and attention paid to the coordinated development of arts, science, economics and management. Hohai is also one of the first universities empowered by the State Council to confer the degrees of Doctor, Master and Bachelor and has been classified by the State as one of the 100 universities to be built with priority in the 21st Century(“211 Project).

Changzhou Campus is an important component of Hohai University, with sound education functions, founded in February, 1986, at the approval of the State Education Commission. It is located in the most developed area in Jiangsu Province, right inside the New & High Development Zone of Changzhou, with an area of 450 mu and a staff of 540 faculty members, of whom 110 are professors and associate professors. There are more than 7000 students here in all, of whom about 200 are postgraduates and 5000 are undergraduates. It now consists of the college of Mechanical & Electrical Engineering, the College of Computer and Information Engineering (Changzhou), the College of Commerce (Changzhou), the College of Asia-Australia Commerce and the four Departments of Basic Courses.

Changzhou Campus takes various measures in curriculum construction, essential-facility and public-service improvement and run the school according to the requirements of Hohai University’s overall aims.

As a result of the efforts over the years, Changzhou Campus has already developed its own curriculum system, which lays emphasis on the rising science, the frontier science and intersecting science, on the cultivation of the personnel in mechanical science and on the scientific research, stepping up the development of the information and management subjects with Hohai University together. It now consists of 13 undergraduate course majors, as mechanical project and automation, and is the authorizer of the master degrees of 6 majors, including “mechanical design and theory”, “material procession engineering”, “mechanical and electrical engineering”, “communication and information system”, “mechanical manufacture and automation”, “ test technology and automation installation”, and the authorizer for the engineering masters in the two fields of “industry engineering” and “mechanical engineering”.

Changzhou Campus takes efforts to deepen the reform of education, pays attention to develop the teaching team, optimize the teaching plan, and strengthen the basic courses and the basic courses of each major, especially computer science and foreign language teaching. According to the requirements of the planning of curriculums and the development of social economy, it sets the major courses as elective courses, which help to expand students’ comprehensive quality. It strengthens the practice part of teaching, pays attention to the cultivation of students’ creativity and their awareness to start their own undertakings, and takes the driving training into the teaching plan of each major. From the year 1996 on, Changzhou Campus began to run the credit system and take a series of new measures at a full scale. As a result, the outstanding graduates can be accepted to take the postgraduate courses without exams; outstanding students can take a second major. As the education reform deepened, the quality of teaching improved constantly, the graduates have been welcome by society, and the employment rate stays high.

While attaching adequate importance to teaching, Changzhou Campus pays sufficient attention to mental civilization, carrying out various programs to cultivate students by teaching, by administrating and by rear service. I was rewarded in 1994 the honor of “Civilized Unit” by Changzhou Municipal government and passed the “University Atmosphere” inspection by Jiangsu Province.
