Distance Course Development Proposal: Curriculum Evaluation

Department of Technology,
Ball State University
March 23, 2007

This proposal follows the format suggested by the BSU School of Extended Education Faculty Input Group (www.bsu.edu/iandt/official/rfp.htm) that has been adopted by the Department of Technology.

Proposed New Distance Course Development

1. Course

  • Course Title: Curriculum Evaluation (an online course)
  • Course Number: Initially this course will be offered as ITEDU 600, which is a Special Topics course number.
  • Course Developer and Proposed Initial Instructor: Dr. Mary Annette Rose, Assistant Professor, Department of Technology, arose@bsu.edu 285-5648
  • Development to occur in Spring 2007 under a 3-credit assigned time agreement (i.e., course buy out). Initial implementation is planned for Fall 2008, with revision to follow.
  • Support sought: $3000 for a course release in Spring 2008 from University Teleplex in the 2007/8 fiscal year

2. Rationale

  • The existing course in "Curriculum Development" has demonstrated an unmet interest and need for a separate course on curriculum evaluation.
  • Enrollments have grown since these master's programs were placed online in 2002, but the number of online courses offered by the Department of Technology has been reduced from 15 to 13 over this period, in spite of enrollment growth.
  • The Department of Technology's Graduate Education Committee has approved the development of this course, noting that it will serve students in both the MA in Technology Education and the MA in Career and Technical Education.

3. Course Development Plan

  • Compile and review potential information and instructional materials.
  • Develop a course syllabus, with course description, rationale, goals, and content outline.
  • Develop "teaching and learning plans," including text and multimedia components.
  • Develop student assessment strategies and materials.

4. Development Timeline

Spring 2008:

  • Develop draft materials
  • Review and feedback of draft materials by graduate faculty
  • Incorporate feedback

Fall 2008:

  • Initial implementation

5. Evaluation

The draft materials will be reviewed by the Department's Director of Online Education and the Departments online graduate faculty prior to the end of Spring 2008.

6. Justification for Late Application

This proposal is submitted after the due date for course development support for 2007/2008. It is justified by new evidence of an unmet need for the course, by increasing enrollment, and by the recent approval of the ITEDU 690 Special Topics course.
