Characteristics

Habitat: wet meadows, bogs
Plant Height: 13-25 cm, rhizome, erect stalks
Flower Color: blue to purple, usually much darker at base
Flower: complete; perfect; flowers stand well above base; 5-parted; lateral 2 petals bearded, lower petals spurred
Inflorescence: single flower on very long pedicle
Fruit: capsule
Leaves: simple; heart-shaped; long stalk
Bloom Time: April-June
Origins: native
Other: similar to V. sororia;; inV. cucullata, the hairs are thick and rounded at the tip, like tiny clubs; inV. sororia  hairs are pointed; other differences include V. cucullata  flowers stand above base, V. sororia  flowers are level with leaves
