Characteristics

Habitat: rich woods, steep slopes, prefers calcareous soil
Plant Height: 20-50 cm; erect, simple to branching above; glabrous; from rhizomes and thickened roots
Flower Color: yellow 
Flower: perfect; 6 nodding tepals, spirally curled; 6 erect stamens; 3-locular superior ovary; placentation axile; ovules many; 3 styles; stigmas slightly curved at apex 
Inflorescence: single flower terminating stems, appearing axillary by prolongation of branches
Fruit: capsule
Leaves: simple; entire; alternate; perfoliate (pierced by stem); rounded at base, acute at apex; glabrous
Bloom Time: April-May
Origins: native
Other: the roots and young shoots of U. grandiflora  can be eaten; traditionally, the plant was used to treat sore muscles, backaches, toothaches, and swelling; see also U. perfoliata
