Characteristics

Habitat: 30 cm tall or taller, erect, glabrous, greenish above, purplish near base
Plant Height: 30+cm, erect; greenish above, purplish near base; simple, from short, horizontal rhizomes.
Flower Color: red (maroon)
Flower: complete; perfect; 3 recurved sepals; 3 petals, erect; 6 erect stamens, adnate at base of perianth; ovary superior, 3-sided but parted so appearing 6-angled with 3-locules; styles 3
Inflorescence: solitary, sessile, terminal flower
Fruit: many-seeded berry
Leaves: entire; simple; whorls of 3 at apex of stem; short, distinct petiole; elliptic to ovate; mottled above
Bloom Time: April-May
Origins: native
Other: petals yellow with age
