Characteristics

Habitat: rich, moist woods
Plant Height: 30-50 cm, rhizomous herb
Flower Color: yellow
Flower: 4-5 cm wide; 4 petals; 2 caducous (fall of as flower opens); sepals stamens numerous; pistil 1
Inflorescence: solitary or in small, terminal clusters
Fruit: 2-parted capsule; pubescent
Leaves: opposite or basal; pinnately compound; lobed
Bloom Time: April-May
Origins: native
Other: plant with yellow sap once used by Native Americans as a dye; diphyllum refers to fact that only plants with 2 leaves produce flowers
