Characteristics

Habitat: mesic
Plant Height: to 15 cm; erect aerial stem, angled; roots fibrous
Flower Color: purple
Flower:

nodding; single whorl of 6 tepals 6 with single blue midvein; 6 stamens adnate to base of tepals; superior ovary, 3-angled, 3 locules; ovules many; placentation axile

Inflorescence: loose raceme terminating stem; occasionally single flower terminating stem
Fruit: capsule
Leaves: basal; entire; linear to narrowly oblong; usually 2-3 per plant
Bloom Time: March-April
Origins: non-native
Other: also known as Glory of the Snow); Russian native has escaped cultivation; can be aggressive even invasive; species is toxic
