Characteristics

Habitat: moist woods and slopes
Plant Height: 20-50 cm tall; erect stem; glabrous or sometimes pubescent above; multiple stems from base
Flower Color: yellow
Flower: complete; 5 yellow petals shorter than 5 green, drooping sepals; numerous stamens and pistils
Inflorescence: single terminal flower on long glabrous peduncle
Fruit: single-seeded achene with short beak in short-ovoid head on receptacle
Leaves: basal leaves round with heart-shaped base (kidney shaped) on long petioles, often variously lobed or divided; cauline (upper) leaves typically sessile, usually deeply divided 3-5 times
Bloom Time: April-June
Origins: native
Other: at first glance can be mistaken for many other species but basal leaves and fruit are distinctive
