Characteristics

Habitat: cosmopolitan
Plant Height: to 5 dm mostly erect, sometimes prostrate
Flower Color: yellow
Flower: perfect; complete; 5 yellow petals; 10 stamens, outer antepetalous, 5 shorter; pistil erect
Inflorescence: terminal flower, usually 2-7 flowered
Fruit: capsular on straight or ascending stalk
Leaves: 1-2 cm wide; palmate with 3 heart-shaped leaflets
Bloom Time: May through October
Origins: believed to be native
Other: referred to as O. europaea  in some common field guides, though some differentiate between O. europaea  and O. stricta  based on whether seedpod stalks are deflexed; Gleason and Cronquist, 1991, does not make same distinction, name taken from this source; leaves close at night
