Characteristics

 

 

Habitat: rich, moist, well-drained soils
Plant Height: 8-16 cm, erect stem
Flower Color: yellow
Flower: incomplete; perfect; 6 bright yellow sepals; petals absent; stamens and pistils numerous
Inflorescence: single, terminal flower 
Fruit: several seeded, beaked follicle 
Leaves: 3 leaves; deeply divided into 3s subtending flower
Bloom Time: March-April
Origins: non-native
Other: this southern Europe native often escapes cultivation; blooms in late winter or very early spring; the whole plant, above all the tuber, is strongly poisonous causing nausea, vomiting, colic attacks and visual disturbances can occur
