Indian Strawberry

Scientific Name Duchesnea indica  (Andrews) Focke.
Family Name Rosaceae (Rose Family)

 

Characteristics

Habitat: moist waste places and open woods
Plant Height: pubescent, trailing stem to 7-8 cm long
Flower Color: yellow
Flower: 5 petals, leafy bracts extend beyond petals and sepals; numerous stamens; short hypanthium
Inflorescence: single flower borne in leaf axis
Fruit: aggregate, red fruit resembles strawberry but tasteless
Leaves: alternate; leaflets in 3s with long stalk and stipules
Bloom Time: April-July
Origins: non-native
Other: naturalized from India, genus name honors Antoine Nicolas Duchesne, 17th-century botanist; may be confused with Potentilla simplex  (common cinquefoil) which has 5 leaflets
