Characteristics

 

Habitat: moist or dry woods, prairies and meadows
Plant Height: 20-50 cm
Flower Color: pink, sometimes white or lilac
Flower: nodding; long pediceled; 5 recurved petals; 5 protruding, yellow stamens, connate around ovary, ovary glabrous, ovules many, placentation free-central.
Inflorescence: flat-topped umbel with long peduncle; +/- 10 flowers
Fruit: many-seeded capsule; dehiscent, opening lengthwise
Leaves: basal; spatulate
Bloom Time: May-June
Origins: native
Other: pioneers called it Prairie Pointers; chief pollinators are bees which must force their way into united stamens to reach nectar
