Scientific Name Dicentra canadensis  (Goldie) Walp.

Characteristics

Habitat: rich woods
Plant Height: 10-30 cm
Flower Color: white, sometimes tinted pink
Flower: perfect; sepals minute; 4 petals; 1-2 cm long; outer pair of petals large and spurred; inner pair narrow; nectary spurs; flower heart shaped
Inflorescence: long raceme arising from bulb, arching at apex, glabrous
Fruit: capsule
Leaves: basal, long-petiolate, trifoliolate; leaflets petiolulate, pinnately divided
Bloom Time: late April-early May
Origins: native
Other: much like D. Cucullaria  except bulblets are fewer, about twice as large, pea-shaped and yellow giving them the appearance of a kernels of corn; flowers are fragrant; both species are poisonous to grazing cattle
