Characteristics

Habitat: medium moisture; full sun or partial shade
Plant Height: to 15 cm
Flower Color: purple; white; purple and white stripped; depends on cultivator
Flower: anthers and style colorful, typically orange; whorls of 3 sepals and 3 petals giving appearance of 6 petals
Inflorescence: single, terminal flower
Fruit: capsule
Leaves: basal; linear; often with whitish stripe down center
Bloom Time: March-April
Origins: non-native
Other: popular early bloomer has escaped cultivation; flowers close at night and open with the sun rise; several different cultivators and colors
