Purple Spring Cress

Scientific Name Cardamine douglassii   Britton
Family Name Brassicaceae (Mustard Family)

 

Characteristics

Habitat: moist woods, springs
Plant Height: 30 cm
Flower Color: rose-purple or pink occasionally white
Flower: perfect; complete; 4 petals; 4 purple slightly hairy sepals turning brown with age; stamens 6
Inflorescence: terminal clusters of single flowers on long pedicles
Fruit: silique (elongated seed pod) to 2cm long
Leaves: basal leaves long-stalked and roundish; cauline leaves stalkless and slightly toothed
Bloom Time: March-May
Origins: native
Other: stems usually hairy; Cardamine bulbosa  similar to C. douglassii  (also known as Pink Spring Cress)except flowers are white, stem is less hairy and C. bulbosa  found in wetter habitats
