Green Dragon

Scientific Name Arisaema dracontium  (L.) Schott
Family Name Araceae (Arum Family)

 

Characteristics

Habitat: damp woods, low rich ground, streambanks
Plant Height: 20-50 cm (taller at maturity); erect stem
Flower Color: green
Flower: incomplete; tiny, single, unisexual flowers on larger inflorescence (spadix)
Inflorescence: solitary; arises from basal sheath; green spathe surrounds a spadix that tapers to a long slender point that extends 5-15 cm beyond spathe; plants can be either dioecious or monoecious
Fruit: orange-red berries become visible after spathe withers
Leaves: basal; entire; compound; divided into 5-15 leaflets
Bloom Time: May-June
Origins: native
Other: roots contain calcium oxalate crystals and are poisonous in an uncooked state; very similar to A. triphyllum, though less frequent
