Rue Anemone

Scientific Name Anemonella thalictroides  (L.) Spach.
Family Name Ranunculaceae (Buttercup Family)

 

Characteristics

Habitat: dry or moist woods
Plant Height: 10-20 cm tall, erect stem
Flower Color: white (can be pinkish)
Flower: incomplete; perfect; petals none; 5-10 sepals; pistils typically 8-12; 2 cm wide
Inflorescence: small umbel usually consisting of 2-3 flowers on long stalks
Fruit: one-seeded indehiscent (stays closed at maturity) achene
Leaves: opposite; basal; small whorls of 3-lobes beneath the flower; leaflets are not deeply lobed
Bloom Time: April-May
Origins: native
Other: often confused with False Rue Anemone (Isopyrum biternatum ); A. thalictroides  has more sepals and has multiple stamens and pistils while the I. biternatum  has many stamens but only 4-7 pistils
