"Each time someone
stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others,
or
strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope."

| The
7th grade students at
Harshman Middle School in Indianapolis, Indiana spent the 2003-2004 school year defining the characteristics of a livable community. This theme shaped many diverse projects that focused on topics ranging from economic development, crime levels, opportunities for recreation, availability of public transportation, and access to health care.
Harshman students were interested in environmental issues, particularly the water quality of Pogue’s Run and Pleasant Run. These two streams flow through the school's campus, local parks, and surrounding neighborhoods and were the focus of the pupils' concern and efforts. The location of Harshman Middle School is indicated on the map above by the red "X" on the intersection of Pogue's Run and 10th Street.
