The Center awarded the members of the top teams of the fall Stock Market Game an all-expense paid trip to New York City's financial district. On Saturday, October 26, 2002, 683 students in grades 4-7 and their parents participated in a series of activities on money at the Dover Sheraton. Sixteen Delaware middle school teachers attended the training, February 21-23, on “Making a Job.”FLORIDA What do Governor Jeb Bush, NASDAQ and the Miami-Dade Community College Center for Economic Education have in common? “First Serve.” The Stock Market Game is under the supervision of Securities Industry Foundation for Economic Education (SIFEE) and BizTech which is a program from the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE). GEORGIA The Georgia Council on Economic Education has a new database system that integrates and streamlines much administration for Council functions. HAWAII The Hawai'i Council on Economic Education welcomes a new Executive Director, Kristine Castagnaro. The Hawai'i Council’s Stephen L. Jackstadt award for outstanding contribution to economic education will be given to Senator Daniel Akaka. The Illinois Council on Economic Education received a $420,000 grant from the Illinois Board of Higher Education to establish the Illinois Global Economics & Finance High Schools (IGEFHS). The Illinois Council on Economic Education (ICEE) at their Annual Meeting and Luncheon on March 5, 2003, presented a number of awards for long standing dedication to the Council’s work. The Indiana Council for Economic Education is planning a 50th Anniversary Gala for October 10th at the Indianapolis Athletic Club. The Ball State University Center has presented workshops on the economics and political science concepts that fourth through middle school teachers can teach using the context of the first two books in the Harry Potter series. MAINE The Maine Council has received a major grant from the Verizon Foundation to develop a program in financial and consumer literacy in conjunction with the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and the Maine Office of Consumer Credit Regulation. We’re staying busy at the Minnesota Council! Research on Curt Anderson’s Seas, Trees and Economies curriculum in fall, 2002, revealed impressive gains in cognitive understanding by elementary students. The Council received funding again this year from the Improving Teacher Quality Program to provide graduate coursework in basic economic content and “Enhancing Social Studies Curricula with Economics.” In addition to our basic courses, we’re concentrating on delivering professional development in Mathematics & Economics and Financial Fitness for Life. We’re proud to have, once again, a regional winner in the NASDAQ National Teaching Awards in Economic Education. Finally, we’re also proud to note recent honors achieved by Minnesota Council faculty. The Missouri Council just completed a yearlong project titled “The Study” which made five recommendations to the Governor’s Office and the Missouri General Assembly. The University of Missouri-Kansas City Center and Operation Outreach are holding the 5th Annual Economic Education Conference for teachers on March 27. The University of Missouri-St. Louis Center held its 7th Annual Economic Literacy Conference for teachers featuring the Financial Fitness for Life materials.
