For many teens, the initial reaction to the idea of being pregnant is one of disbelief. To help deal with the shock of becoming a parent, many teens turn to local guidance programs to prepare themselves for the baby. Many Muncie teens are referred to Youth for Christ, a non-profit organization that focuses on building good relationships between adults and teens. We build relationships with kids to help them along the way, Hope Lehman, Youth for Christ counselor, said. Being a teenager is tough, and we want our teens to make good decisions. Lehman focuses primarily on teens with the pregnant parent program. Generally high school guidance counselors refer teens to Lehman. Local teen parents were referred to Youth for Christ and found the extra help was useful. We were feeling kind of alone, and not sure who to talk to, she said. But it was definitely helpful. |
