Step 3. the Proposal

1. Must I type the proposal?

Hand written proposals are not acceptable.  You should word process the proposal and either email it to me (preferred) or mail it to me.  I am concerned about viruses, so plese be careful what you send me.

2. What should be included in the proposal?

Psychological Questions Directing the Project:

Good Example 1 – [autism]  What is the nature of autism?  What are the myths about autism?  Is it portrayed reasonably in the film “Rainman?”

Good Example 2 – [humor] Why are some things funny?  What are the theories of humor?  Are there major categories or types of humor?  Can one learn to be funnier?

Bad Example 3 – [dreaming] I’m interested in dreams.

Bad Example 4 – [wrestling] My friends and I want to videotape ourselves acting like professional wrestlers.

The questions you choose are very important.  Think about what you really want to know.  You should probably have at least 5 or 6 questions.

Resources:

Paper Media: You must have at least one specific book or article (from library or other source) that will help you understand the psychological theories and concepts relevant to your project.  I want you to learn how to find good paper resources.

Example 1 – [autism]  Although “Rainman” can be part of your project, it is not a psychological resource.  You would need a book like Richard L. Simpson and Paul Zionts (1999).  Autism : information and resources for professionals and parents.

Example 2 – [humor] Although you might use examples from “The Spy Who Shagged Me,” it is not a psychological resource.  You would need a book like Willibald Ruch (1998). The sense of humor : explorations of a personality characteristic.

Web:  You must have at least one specific web site that will help you understand the psychological theories and concepts relevant to your project.  These are easier to find, but often the quality is different to ascertain.

Example 1 – [autism] www.inspire-indiana.net is an interesting general site.  But it is not a specific site about autism.  A good example is the Center for study of autism at http://www.autism.org/

Example 2 – [humor] Indicating you will look on the web is not enough.  You need to identify a specific site such as theories of humor at http://spsp.clarion.edu/mm/RDE3/C2/wc2humor.html
