Scene 4


Narrator:

And so, our heroes are taken into the clutches of the evil Emperor Muckraker. The story unfolds…
(Lights up on stage. The back wall is the same wall we used in the previous scene, now turned parallel to the back wall of the stage. A set of bars is projected with a gobo. [A gobo is a pattern used to create shadows onstage.] A Guard walks from SR to SL and offstage. Flint is consoling Sparky in the USR corner of the cell. Cinder is sitting DSL corner of the cell, looking through the “bars”. Fogg is standing USC looking out the window of the cell. There is a space scene in this window.)

(There is a short pause.)

Fogg:
We have to find a way out of here.
Others:
Duh!
(Another short pause.)

Cinder:
I don’t know guys. The situation looks bleak.
Sparky:
(mildly scared) What do you mean?
Cinder:
Muckraker has captured us. He took our weapons. He probably is making plans right now to execute us in a cruel and unusual way.
Flint:
(Covering Sparky’s ears) Stop it, Cinder! You’re scaring her!
Cinder:
Every man needs a little fear!
Flint:
She’s just a girl!
Fogg:
(Looking directly at Flint) Stop it! (Realizes she’s looking directly at Flint, turns to Cinder, more softly.) Both of you. (A period. Important.) Why don’t you guys get some sleep? We can think of a plan in the morning.
Flint:
That sounds like a good idea.
Cinder:
Yeah…
(Cinder, Flint, and Sparky prepare to sleep. Fogg turns to each of them as she speaks. Misty keyboardist slides on USL or DSL)

Fogg:
Good night, Flint. Good night, Sparky. Good night, Cinder. (to herself) Sweet dreams.
(She stands on the SR side of the window and sings to it.)

(Stirring) Did you say something, Cindy?
Fogg:
(Embarrassed) No! No, I didn’t say anything… Good night…
(She lies down in the center of the cell.)
