Fume Hoods
Fume hoods are an important component of the Chemistry lab.
During the
year we may conduct experiments or demonstrations where gases that are
noxious
or explosive are produced. When this is the case, we will conduct
these
in the fume hood. When the hood is on, it pulls the gases
produced
from the enclosed area of the hood and vents them to the outside where
they
can disperse to a non hazardous level.
Water Distiller
A water distiller is a useful piece of equipment because this devise
take
normal tap water and removes some of the minerals and dissolved solids
from
the water. This "treated" water is therefore less likely to cause
unwanted
errors in our reactions.
Drying Oven
Drying Oven
A drying oven can be used to dry samples that are wet. This is
often
done when the mass of a sample is desired but the sample was in
solution previously.
A drying oven does not reach the boiling temperature of water,
therefore,
drying may occur over several hours to days.
Water Bath
Water Baths
Water baths are used for slowly warming and then maintaining the
temperature of experimental material for longer periods of time.
Because of the heating characteristics of water, water baths do not
fluctuate temperatures as quickly as heating by hot plate or Bunsen
burner does.
