Sand, Salt, and Iron Inquiry
Lab
| Introduction |
Sand, salt and iron are three substances that most
people can associate
with. Each of these substances can be described based on their
very
different characteristics. These same characteristics might also
be useful in other situations as well.
One of the chief jobs of a chemist is to identify those
characteristics
of a substance that he or she can exploit to achieve the desired
result.
As you study chemistry, pay close attention to the characteristics of
specific
chemicals because similar chemicals may do the same.
|
| Your Task |
Your goal in this project will be to find out about the
characteristics
of sand, salt and iron, learn about the equipment that are available in
the chemistry lab, and infer which lab equipment would be necessary to
separate a mixture of the sand, salt and iron into separate parts.
To do this, use the links below to find sites about
sand, salt and iron,
and to read short pieces of information about the most common equipment
used in the chemistry lab.
