Watch Glass and Glass Rods
A watch glass is a piece of glass, usually curved, is placed over
beakers, flasks, crucibles, or other containers in which reactions that
could produce flying material are occurring. The watch glass
provides safety and the
ability to watch the reaction at the same time.
A glass stirring rod is used to stir reactions to
increase
the rate of reaction and to insure that all material available to react
do. A stir rod can also be used to help control the pouring of a
liquid. By using a stir rod during pouring, the liquid is
encouraged to travel down
the rod and into the intended container.
Evaporating Dishes
Evaporating Dish
An evaporating dish is used to evaporate solutions in order to recover
solid
materials that are dissolved within the solution. Evaporating
dishes
can be heated to increase evaporation, however, higher temperature may
cause
the dish to crack therefore high heat should not be used. If high
heat
is indicated, a crucible should be used.
