Hot Plates
Hot plates are electrical devises that are used to heat substances.  Hot plates are effective tools when Bunsen burners and other sources of heat are not available, when it is impractical to use them or when open flames might lead to explosions.  Hot plates have thick surfaces that heat up slowly but retain heat well.  Hot plates do not visually change colors when heated, so extra safety must be taken when in use.

Magnetic stirrer, magnets and magnet retriever
A magnetic stirrer is a devise that allows the chemist to stir solutions without being in direct contact with the solution container.  This devise is most useful when chemist needs to allow mixture to continue over extended times but also work on other lab procedures.  The magnetic stirrer works by turning a magnet under the top of the stirrer, a plastic coated bar magnet is added to the solution to be mixed and the solution is put on top of the stirrer.  As the magnet inside turns, so does the magnet in the solution.  When the mixing is done, a magnet retriever (covered magnet on a rod) is used to remove the magnet from the solution.
