Graduated Cylinders
Where beakers and flasks are not good tools for measuring the volumes of liquids, graduated cylinders are made for just that task.  To learn what a graduated cylinder is used for, let us look at its name.  The term graduated in this case means to be marked with degrees of measurement.  The cylindrical shape allows for more precise measurements since each volume measurement is extended vertically.  Graduated cylinders are made from both plastic and glass.  Special care must be shown with glass cylinders since the cylinder shape is easily tipped over.

Funnels
As with many pieces of lab equipment, funnels come in several different shapes and functions.  However, a basic upside-down cone shape is the most common used funnel in basic chemistry classes.  The functions of a funnel include reducing spills when liquids are transferred from container to container.  This is important when transferring a liquid from a large vessel like a beaker to a container like a graduated cylinder or buret.  Another important function of a funnel is in conjunction with filter paper.  When combined with filter paper, a filtering apparatus used to separate solids from liquids is made.
