The media is owned primarily by a few select companies.
However, all those companies are very powerful and often have an answer
for every company's innovation. For instance, after ABC had success wtith
Who Wants to be a Millionaire,
which was adapted from British television, primetime gameshows became a
sensation, with every network developing a show. However, primetime gameshows
proved to be a fad and not a trend. The competition is always trying to
capitalize on trends for a quick buck. Fox, which is notorious for low-brow
trash television, began producing several shows that underminded the traditional
American values:
Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire,
Temptation
Island, and
Joe Millionaire. Every week it seems like a network
is promoting a new program of this sort. In the media, the competition to
bound to imitate. Fox followed in the footsteps of Ted Turner by creating
a 24 hour news program. NBC soon followed with MSNBC. News Corporation,
like all media conglomerates, is trying to make its similar product appear
distinct.
