A BRIEF HISTORY TIMELINE OF NEWS CORPORATION

1922: News Limited is started.

1923: News Limited begins publishing a daily newspaper in Adelaide, Australia.

1931 Rupert Keith Murdoch is born in Victoria, Melbourne, Australia on March 11, 1931.

1953 Rupert's father dies. Rupert inherits two of his father's relatively small Australian newspapers, The Adelaide News and the Sunday Mail

 1964 Rupert Murdoch creates the Australian.

1968 Rupert Murdoch buys Britain's newspaper The News of the World. Not long afterwards, he also purchases The Sun. Murdoch turns both publications into sensationalist publications. The Sun becomes notorious for "Page Three," which often features topless pictures of women.

1970's Rupert Murdoch begins purchasing magazines and newspaper publications in America. Rupert starts up The Star, a tabloid magazine.

1973 Murdoch purchases The San Antonio Express

1976 Rupert Murdoch purchases the New York Post

1979 News Corporation is formed.

1981 Rupert Murdoch buys the Sunday Times

1982 Rupert Murdoch is voted "communications man of the year" by the American Jewish Congress
in New York.

1985  Rupert Murdoch purchases Metromedia's independent television stations from John Kluge.

1985  Murdoch also buys 50% of 20th Century Fox, which leads to the establishment of the Fox Network, the first new television network since the 1950's. Murdoch becomes an American citizen.

1987 Takes over The Boston Herald and Weekly Times

1988 News Corporation acquires Triangle Publications, which includes TV Guide. News Corporation now had control over a television network and a publication which critiques itself.

1988 After pressure from Senator Edward Kennedy, Murdoch sells the New York Post. Kennedy opposed Murdoch owning television stations and newspapers in both Boston and New York. Murdoch would re-purchase the Post in 1993.

1988 News Corporation starts Sky, a satellite television network. The next year, News Corporation buys British Satellite Broadcasting, a major competitor of Sky, to form British Sky Broadcasting.

1993 News Corporation purchases Asia's Star TV DBS service

1996 News Corporation starts Fox News, a cable news network.

1997 Fox co-releases Titanic,  highest grossing film in history ($1.8 billion)
