"The use of computers to present text, graphics, video, animation, and
sound in an integrated way."
Longman Web
Dictionary: "using a mixture of sound, pictures, film, and writing
to give information, especially with computers"
Examples
There are many examples of multimedia in the marketplace
today, but I will only focus on three different types: DVD's,
Personal
Computers, and Video
Games.

Implications
Multimedia is important to us because it is everywhere.
We are always mixing different media such as sound, video and text.
It is happening in many technologies we use such as the examples above.
Multimedia makes technologies more useful to consumers.
For example, personal computers are not just used for writing text papers.
They incorporate many types of media and this can save consumers money.
For instance, instead of having a TV, Stereo, and a DVD player you can
have it all in a personal computer if you choose. Which is also an
example of convergence.
Other Thoughts
I only see advantages of multimedia. When used
correct it can aid in education or simply entertain consumers. The
trend makes computers, DVD players and video games all possible.
I feel this megatrend is most like convergence because they're both bringing
stuff together. Convergence is more bringing different products such
as a TV and a VCR together whereas multimedia is combining the actual media.
Multimedia is an unstoppable trend because people are always going to mix
sight and sound.
