Initiative IV: Economic Opportunity

Wired, Ready and Waiting: Delaware County Network Assessment
In cooperation with the Muncie-Delaware County Chamber of Commerce, the Delaware Advancement Corporation, the Community Outreach Partnership Center assessed the status of Muncie and Delaware County against the standards of "networked communities."
Underemployment Study
Muncie, Indiana and the surrounding areas have been experiencing a decline in industry. As a former manufacturing town, that has recently seen many layoffs as factories are moved or closed down, Muncie has been experiencing problems with underemployment, unemployment, and the dislocation of workers. Efforts are being made to address this problem and to improve the community’s potential for new residents. This study, which will help to match workforce skills to those needed by employers and especially future employers, will be used to provide appropriate training programs. This provision should then help to alleviate employment problems in Muncie and help to attract businesses.
Initiative Links
  • Muncie Tech Today
The Muncie-Delaware County Community Technology Initiative (CTI) is a forum of corporate, academic, and government leaders who are dedicated to technology and innovation in our community. CTI is a integral part of the new Vision 2006 Economic Development Program. Vision 2006 is the five-year community and economic development plan focused on the creation of wealth, economic prosperity, and increased quality of life. This growth will be achieved through the creation of new jobs, the retention of existing jobs, expansion of the tax base, and capital investment by the private sector.
  • Muncie Innovation Connector
Formed in September 2003 by a group of forward thinking community leaders, the Connector addresses East Central Indiana’s need to be proactive in providing opportunities to develop new products and technologies.
The Connector builds upon the area’s historical reputation for innovation by developing both new and existing businesses within the region. The programs and services provide vital supportive resources to stimulate, accommodate, and enable the free flow of ideas as part of establishing an innovative and high tech economy.
  • Muncie on the Web
Community groups have worked together to provide an organized set of informational links for the Muncie/Delaware County community.
