Examples of the growing trend of electronic personalization
can be seen everywhere in today's marketplace. From organizers to television,
personalization is a new but quickly expanding aspect of telecommunications.
Some of the examples on the web are
services such as
,
,and
which provide anyone with internet access, a personalized set of
information which include email, weather, stocks, sports, horoscopes,
local news, television and movie listings, access to phone books, and instant
messaging services. All of these services have no fee but advertise
many different companies using banners and ads on their web sites.
In recent years, PDA's or personal digital assistants have increased greatly in popularity.
These miniature, mobile, computers contain many different applications
such as calendars, address books, email, wireless internet capability,
word processing, games, and many others. See Sony
for more information.
Another, very common, new form of the personalization
of technology are the Tivo and ReplayTV digital
video recording systems. These providers offer the viewer many different
choices. A viewer can tell the DVR his or her favorite actor, director,
or type of program and it will record anything that fits the category. It
also allows the viewer to pause, rewind, or fast forward live television,
giving the viewer the freedom of when to watch his or her favorite shows
without the hassle of videotapes and VCR's.
