According to Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary,
personalization is the act of marking as the property of a particular
person. In view of telecommunications, however, personalization is taking
different services and technologies which are open to millions, and customizing
them to fit own's one particular interests.

states that personalization is "Custom tailoring to the individual. On the
web, personalization means returning a page that has been customized for
the user, taking into consideration that person's habits and preferences.
The personalization may be done by the user, the Web site or both and may
be aimed at the general public or company employees."
Dr. Michael Gerhard,
a professor of telecommunications at Ball State University, states that
personalization "refers to the delivery of personalized information via
Personal Digital Assistants, and the Web, including news, stocks, sports,
