Welcome to the Mitchell Vision Plan
"I know of no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society
but the people themselves."
--Thomas Jefferson |
The Mitchell Vision Plan is an effort to create a long term
community plan for the city of Mitchell, Indiana. Because change happens all
the time, a community must decide the specific criteria they will use to
judge, manage and even direct that change. Instead of reacting after
the fact to forces that alter their community, residents armed with a
strategic vision can better reinforce the changes that they desire, and
discourage changes that detract from that vision. Having a shared
vision allows a community to focus its diverse energies and avoid conflicts
in the present as well as the future.
By including residents, businesses, non-profits, local
officials, and other community members in a process that empowers them as a
whole, visioning reinforces the idea that people do have a say in their
collective futures, and they also have a responsibility to each other.
Visioning is a process that all community members can have a stake in; the
vision is their plan to provide their future, not someone else's imposed
idea of what it should be.
