Before applying to become a telecommunications major or minor, students complete a pre-telecommunications core of five courses.  A grade of C (2.0) in each pre-TCOM course and an overall grade-point average of 2.5 in the pre-TCOM core courses are required.  Competency also must be demonstrated in language usage, grammar, and computer skills.  All prospective majors and minors are required to complete a departmental application and participate in a departmental orientation session.  Majors cannot choose more than one option in the department, and they are not eligible to select either minor offered by the department.

To graduate as a telecommunications major or minor, students must earn a grade of C (2.0) or above in all courses required by the department (pre-TCOM and option, including option classes outside the department) and achieve a grade-point average of 2.5 in all courses required by the department (pre-TCOM and option, including option classes outside the department).  All telecommunications majors also must complete four semesters or the equivalent in one modern or classical language; all telecommunications minors must complete two semesters or the equivalent in one modern or classical language.  Film minors have no departmental language requirement, but are encouraged to take at least two semesters of French.  Students may be eligible to earn a portion of their language credit by successfully completing an exam; details on credit by examination are available from the Department of Modern Languages and Classics.

Telecommunication option courses generally are open only to approved departmental majors and minors; pre-TCOM courses generally are open only to approved pre-TCOM students.  All other students must receive permission from a course instructor before enrolling.  All TCOM courses in the 300- level and 400-level must be completed at Ball State University, except for TCOM 330 and TCOM 332, for which transfer credit is accepted.  No more than 12 hours of transfer credits are accepted in the major; no more than 9 hours of transfer credit are accepted in either minor.
