College
Overview
Science and Engineering Research
Semester
Departments and ProgramsThe College of Sciences and Humanities
is characterized by diversity and a commitment to liberal education. The college is a
remarkably diverse unit, housing the humanities; the physical, earth, and life sciences;
and the social sciences--subjects central to the University Core Curriculum courses
required of all students.
The College of Sciences and
Humanities, the largest academic unit at Ball State University, is committed to liberal
education and to the belief that students must be trained in specific skills and educated
to think critically, communicate clearly, solve problems creatively, act responsibly, and
live fully. The college is committed to a concept of wholeness, an ideal of coherence that
helps faculty and students synthesize knowledge and make connections among the many
specialties and subspecialties that compose the universe of knowledge.
Teacher education students in the
college are required to earn a 2.5 grade-point average in each
teaching major, minor, primary, or supporting area or endorsement.
The United States Department of Energy,
through its Office of Energy Research, sponsors an academic-year program at six national
laboratories. This program, Science and Engineering Research Semester (SERS), is designed
to encourage undergraduate students to pursue advanced degrees in the sciences and
engineering. Students selected to participate in this program become members of research
teams engaged in leading-edge scientific and engineering research employing
state-of-the-art facilities and equipment.
Ball State University students often
select Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago for their semester of research in such
disciplines as biological, environmental, and medical sciences; ceramics; chemistry;
physics; computer science; mathematics; and materials science. Academic credit may be
earned during this research semester.
Students interested in including a
research semester at one of the National Laboratories should plan early in their academic
programs for such an experience. Additional information on this program can be obtained
from the SERS coordinator, Dean's Office, College of Sciences and Humanities, NQ 112, or
by calling (765) 285-1042.
