The College of Communication,
Information, and Media is an innovative learning community in
which students discover, integrate, and apply the tools needed for
success in the communication professions. This includes discovery of
the many ways people communicate, integration of the use of
information and high technology into the student's own communication,
and application of these abilities through the practices of writing
well, speaking persuasively, and producing media creatively. Students
are mentored to be leaders and innovators in the communication
professions and in the service of their community. The college offers
programs in advertising, broadcast journalism, convergent journalism,
media production, human communication, information and
communication sciences, media sales and promotion, multi-media, organizational
communication, print journalism, public relations, and television
production.

101 The Digital World. (3)
Introduction to types of human
interaction made possible by digital media. Exploration of
individualization, innovation, imagination, interactivity,
minimization, and internationalization of digital communication.
Positive and negative impacts and ramifications of a digital
world.
201 Digital Message Analysis and
Design. (3)
Conceptual introduction to critique and design of persuasive
digital messages. Process
of persuasion—communication to alter attitudes, beliefs, or
behavior—in the context of digital interactive media.
Prerequisite: ICOM 101 with a
grade of C (2.0) or better.
Open only to digital media minor and certificate students not
majoring in communication studies.
211 Digital Interactivity Design.

Digital media design as the design of
artifacts to support interactive experience.
Explores relationships among interactivity, interface design,
and communication. Individual
and collaborative projects geared to heighten understanding of
designing for interactivity.

212 Digital Image Design. (3)
Emphasizes aesthetic understanding and
practical facility with digital content as effective visual
communication. Emphasis
on development of digital imaging competencies, techniques, and
aesthetics.

213 Digital Video Design. (3)
Basic knowledge and laboratory work in
development of digital video and audio.
Introduction to creating digital video productions with digital
cameras and computer hardware and software.
Aesthetics and techniques of digital video and audio recording
and non-linear editing.
Prerequisite: ICOM 101 with a grade of C (2.0) or better.

214 Digital Sound Design. (3)
Explores creative use and manipulation
of digital audio to produce compositions and sound designs suitable
for different types of digital media projects.
Focuses on technical skills, creativity, and an understanding
of digital audio in context.

375 Digital Storytelling. (3)
Covers fundamentals of writing,
formatting, digitizing, adapting, repurposing, and distributing
digital media stories for application in information, communication,
and entertainment industries.
Prerequisite: two courses from ICOM 201, 211, 212, 213, or 214
with a grade of C (2.0) or better.

495 Senior Capstone. (3)
Synthesis and culmination of
undergraduate digital media design and production experiences in a
group or individual capstone digital media design project.
Prerequisite: two courses from ICOM 201, 211, 212, 213, or 214

499 Colloquium. (1 or 2)
Attendance at colloquia, workshops,
and Center for Media Design events as specified in the digital media
student handbook is the basis for earning colloquium credit.

NEWS (NEWS)
201 Newswriting. (3)
Principles and practices of reporting and writing for multiple media
(e.g., print, broadcast, online). Includes history of print and
electronic media. Outside skills workshops and work at campus media
required.
Prerequisite: JOURN 102 and 104 or 105 required for journalism majors; TCOM 206, 207, and 208 required for telecommunications majors.
202 News Reporting. (3)
Use of interviews, observation, and document research to produce news
reports for print, broadcast, and online media. Special emphasis on
public or community journalism. Outside skills workshops and work at
campus media required.
Prerequisite: NEWS 201.
Not open to prejournalism students.
385 Multimedia Storytelling.
(3)
Explores journalistic storytelling produced by interactive media
technologies. Students focus on portraying active narratives that
present multi-sensory experiences. Topics include the use of animation
and electronic visual imagery in news art and journalistic
documentation while balancing content and production techniques.
Prerequisite: JOURN 102, 103; JOURN 345 or NEWS 202.
485 Advanced News Seminar.

Covers multimedia storytelling. Working in teams, students produce
integrated news or feature presentations for varied media. Prerequisite:
JOURN 437 for photojournalism majors; JOURN 445 for graphics majors;
JOURN 413 for news-editorial majors; TCOM 426 for telecommunications
majors.
