Teacher Fair Tip #1

Congratulations! You have taken a big step toward getting a job after graduation by registering for Teacher Fair.

Teacher Fair is a little over one month away and more than 79 employers have already confirmed they will be attending April 30 and May 1, 2008. The list of employers will be updated regularly as more register, so check back often. Specific positions being filled by each employer will be posted closer to the event. Future e-mails will provide more information on researching schools and positions.

Teacher Fair is a two-day event with a networking and interview scheduling session on the first evening and interviews the second day. In order to interview you must attend the evening session on May 2. However, even if you are not seeking employment at this time, you can come to network that night.

In preparation for Teacher Fair you will want to be sure your job-search documents are ready to go. Job-search documents include your résumé, references, portfolio, and transcripts.

Summarize and market your experiences in a résumé they’ll remember. Everyone has a résumé that is unique, but some general information is considered essential. You should include your contact information, education, and experience (highlighting your direct teaching experience as well as general work).

Prepare a reference list including three to five professional references. Do not include their names on your résumé; use a separate page titled References.

Organize your professional portfolio so that it becomes a tool for you to use when answering questions in an interview. The portfolio should highlight your best work and the experiences or recognitions that make you unique. Employers may not have much time to look at your portfolio at Teacher Fair, so pick five to ten documents that show your skills adn bring only those. Be sure to use a professional leather or simulated leather cover--no plastic three-ring binders.

You can get free copies of your transcripts from the registrar’s office in person or by regular mail; if you request a transcript by mail, you must include your signature. Spring classes will not show up on your transcript until after Teacher Fair, so you can get transcripts to use at Teacher Fair anytime between now and April 30.

Pulling these documents together is no easy task. To help you with the basics, we have included links to Career Center resources in the above text. You can get additional help by visiting the Career Center during drop-in advising. Career Center advisors are available to answer questions and provide feedback on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, 1-3 p.m., and Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m.-noon. Because we know it is difficult for student teachers to make it to campus during those hours, we have added special drop-in times on Tuesday and Wednesday from 3 to 4:30 p.m. specifically for teaching majors. No appointment is needed for drop-in advising. If drop-in advising does not meet yoru needs, call 285-1522 to schedule an appointment.

Thank you for your interest in Teacher Fair 2008. We look forward to seeing you there.

Sincerely,

Jenni Smith
