October 14, 2004
A focused, daylong learning track developed by CAP:IC as part of the American Planning Association Regional Planning Conference

Sessions
  • "Who's Advocating for Design?"
Who's sticking up for design in your community? Too often design quality must be sacrificed in our communities. This session seeks to bring together the leaders of successful community and university design centers in an effort to share techniques and to inform the planning public about the potential for collaboration with these successful hubs of design activity.
  • "How can we make Better Design Happen?"
How can we raise the bar for design in our communities? The benefit of design to the public realm and quality of life is not always noticed or documented, so how can we ensure that we create a well-designed community? This session will explore the experiences and availability of design standards and performance guidelines in our communities through discussion and presentation.
  • LUNCHEON: Mayor Jeremy Harris, City of Honolulu, Hawaii
Building a Better City through Better Design   (See Below)
  • "Things will be GREAT when we go DOWNTOWN!"
As we have entered the new millennium, our downtowns have experienced resurgence, with residents and businesses coming back to our urban cores.  What are we doing to plan for this trend?  This session will explore the achievements and challenges of several recently completed downtown plans that take into account these issues and focus on successful, active downtown areas.
  • "Making a project WORTHwhile"
There is an inherent struggle in the development community between high-quality urban design and architecture and development profitability.  Is it time we change what counts towards the bottom line?  This session will bring together development professionals who have found ways to assemble strong design projects while maintaining profitability.
