Lesson Plan for Creating and Publishing the IPSB Artifact
Introduction: The Indiana Professional Standards Board (IPSB)
has outlined seven standards that are core standards for School Services
Professionals. The External Committee for School Counseling
developed an additional 3 standards specifically for School Counselors.
These standards can be reviewed at:http://www.state.in.us/psb/standards/schoolservicesindex.html
The purpose of this guide is to help you in the process of creating and
publishing your portfolio and the initial artifact related to Standard 1
for School Services Professionals.
Let's Begin: Follow the steps below to set up your
account and create an index page for your portfolio using netscape navigator.
Netscape navigator is free and simple to use.
Step
1: Setting up your account.
Go to the BSU Web account creation page, located at www.bsu.edu/frontpage
Choose
the type of account that you wish to create. For student accounts, you will
choose the Personal/Course Web Site link.
Read
the policy and computer instructions, and then follow the link to create
your account.
Enter
your BSU Computer Username and Password
After
a few seconds your account will be created. A web page that contains the
URL of your web site as well as the address used to FTP files to your account
will be displayed. Print out this information for future reference.
The
URL to view your web pages will be www.bsu.edu/web/yourusername,
with yoursuername replaced by your BSU Computer Username.
Web pages will be created using Netscape Composer. Make
sure that you name your main web page, (the page that you want to load
first), index.html
To create a new web page with Netscape 7, go to the File
menu, New
and then over to Composer Page.
A new window will open with a blank page ready for you to edit.
What
do I do ?
Use the following URL to aid you in the development
of your
artifact: www.bsu.edu/web/calexander/standard1.html.
This format is recommended but students can feel free to be as creative
as they would like.
This artifact must be videotaped.
Students must identify the developmental level of students for their
presentation and consult with the classroom teacher about any special needs
of the classroom prior to their presentation. Both teacher and student
must agree on the topic to be presented in class. A pre and post assessment
must be conducted to document student growth as a result of your presentation.
Students are to document the resources they used in developing the classroom
guidance lesson.
Students are to incorporate Marjorie Cutbert (1998) "Cues to Classroom
Guidance" in their presentation.
The List of "Cues to Classroom
Guidance" are :
Once
students have completed the above assignment the following steps should
be followed to publish your artifact on the web.
Mouse
click on the publish icon in the toolbar
OR
go to the File
menu and select Publish.
A window will open with a couple of tabs in it.
The
Settings Tab:
First,
start with the Settings
tab. The Site Name
is a setting you create for your own information. It is not
a setting that has anything to do with Where the
files are published.
The Publishing Address
is an important one. This is the address of the computer on which you place
the files. At Ball State the address for the webserver is: ftp://ftp.publish.bsu.edu/web/yourusername
The HTPP address of your homepage
field is where you type the web address of the page as it needs to be in
a web browser. In Login Information,
you enter your username and password. Now click on the tab for Publish.
I would not place a check mark beside save password, especially if multiple
people are using the same computer.
In the Publish
tab, enter the page title you want. This appears at the top
of the browser window (usually in the window's top bar). Next, enter the
pages filename. This should be index.html (index.htm
is also fine.) if it's the initial page of a web site, such as your homepage.
Once all your settings are entered click mouse click the Publish
button. If everything was entered correctly, the page should publish and
the browser will show you a confirmation window.
To edit and publish an existing web page with Netscape 7, simply open
the page in the browser window. Once the page loads, go to the File menu
and Edit page. The
Composer window will open showing you the content of the page. You
can make necessary changes and then publish the page as described above.
