The Ball State University Biotechnology Certificate Program is housed in the Department of Biology. Our exciting, new, 1- year program provides students with excellent research and laboratory skills which are in high demand. In 7-8 courses (primarily lab based) students are prepared for careers in Biotechnology as research associates capable of designing and performing state-of-the-art research projects. Several of our faculty participate in the program and, when possible, an internship with industry is included in the training.

Students may enter the program as advanced undergraduates if they have the prerequisites. Alternatively, post baccalaureate students may enter just the 1 year certification program or include the program as part of a master’s degree (at least 2 extra graduate level courses are necessary for an MA or MS as well as a thesis for an MS degree). Upon completion of the program, participants will receive certification verifying the successful mastery of the program requirements.

A prerequisite of the program is a course in Cell Biology. If you have not had this course recently it is available each term including 2nd Summer Term (mid-June to mid-July) at BSU. We are currently recommending that students entering the Biotechnology Certificate Program begin by enrolling in Introduction to Recombinant DNA and RNA Techniques (BIOT 490/590) offered for 3 weeks (4 hours/day) the last week of July and first two weeks of August. Although the course is also offered during the Fall term, it is strongly recommended that students complete the course before entering the more advanced courses offered in the Fall.
