Christmas Bird Count results

The Muncie Christmas Bird Count was held on December 22, 2007, as part of the 108th Christmas Bird Count. Started on December 25, 1924, the Muncie CBC had not been conducted for 68 years. Thanks to organizer Bill Grummer, however, this year six groups went out into assigned areas of the 15 mile-diameter count circle to identify and count birds while nine people did the same at their feeders.

Overall, the total species count, 56, was only one less than the previous high count on the Indiana Audubon Society Delaware CBC in 1978. Six species were seen that had not been noted on previous counts: Wood Duck, Gadwall, Double-crested Cormorant, Bald Eagle, Sandhill Crane, and Snow Bunting.

The most frequently seen birds were as follows:

Species Number of individuals
Canada Goose 1427
European Starling 1099
Mallard 840
Mourning Dove 409
House Sparrow 287

General information

The Robert Cooper Audubon Society normally sponsors at least six field trips each year, to enjoy birds and other elements of nature with one another. Trip leaders are frequently designated to share their knowledge on particular topics and locales, but birding trips are often a collaborative affair, allowing novice and experienced birders to benefit from other another.

There is no charge to participate in field trips, although we do try to carpool as much as possible and share the expense of gasoline. As with all RCAS activities, non-Audubon members are always welcomed on field trips.

birdersSpring and fall are our busy seasons for trips, largely because migratory birds can be found making their way through our region at those times. Most trips do not include strenuous hiking or walking, but if they do, that information is provided with field trip announcements. As much as possible, we try to plan trips that are accessible to handicapped persons.

If you would like to lead a trip or have an idea for a field trip, contact Blanche Townsend, Field Trip Chair, at blanchetownsend@att.net or 765-284-0391.
