Building for Birds Campaign

constructionfeature story about WRHhow you can help

The Wildlife Resqu Haus has added a new building!

Diana Shaffer has gradually expanded her wildlife rehabilitation facilities in Yorktown since she first started helping ill and injured animals in 1964. But now she's added her largest, most versatile building: a 20' x 30' enclosed structure that contains amenities she long needed, but never had till now:

  • Plumbing
  • Heating
  • An exam area to evaluate and treat incoming patients
  • Eight large indoor cages for small species and for larger intensive-care patients that can't be placed outside

The new building, which has made Diana's job of caring for 400-600 animals each year much more effective, began admitting new patients early in the spring of 2004.

To help fund the new building, the Robert Cooper Audubon Society launched the Building for Birds campaign in the of fall 2003, to raise $17,000 toward the total expected price tag of $22,000. (The actual cost ended up being just over $25,000.) A grant from the Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County covered the initial $5,000.

To date, Building for Birds has brought in approximately $9,000, thanks to the generosity of dozens of supporters across east central Indiana. The remaining $11,000, however, has been paid out of Diana's own pockets – money that, otherwise, could go directly to animal care and feeding.

If you'd like to help us erase the remaining debt, please read "How you can help." You may also contact Diana directly at 765-759-9112 or at yorktownbirdlady@aol.com.

Nine screech owlsDiana has paid for most feeding and housing expenses of the 8,000+ animals she's taken in over the years. The RCAS has been proud to provide small amounts of financial support to the Resqu Haus each year, but this is our chance to help in a BIG way. We hope you'll be part of that effort.
