Writing Competency Evaluation Standards
(ENG 392 and ENG 393)
(Scores of 2 and 3 pass; scores of 0 and 1 do
not)
A 3 response demonstrates
the following traits:
- Communicates a sophisticated
purpose(s) to an academic audience.
- Aligns that purpose(s)
consistently with the specific requirements of the writing situation,
including the written prompt and the particular needs of the audience.
- Uses vivid, relevant,
well-developed appeals and draws upon the writers unique interests,
talents, goals, and knowledge to help communicate the purpose(s).
Appeals may include but are not limited to reasoning, evidence,
disciplinary knowledge, and historical, cultural, and/or personal values
and experience.
- Organizes materials in a way
or ways that strengthens the audiences understanding.
- Uses language, grammar,
punctuation, and/or other written conventions in ways that enhance or
strengthen the required purpose(s).
A 2 response demonstrates
the following traits:
- Communicates with a focused
purpose(s) to an academic audience.
- Aligns that purpose(s)
consistently with the specific requirements of the writing situation,
including the written prompt and the particular needs of the audience.
- Uses relevant appeals and
draws upon the writers unique interests, talents, goals, and knowledge
to help communicate the purpose(s). Appeals may include but are not
limited to reasoning, evidence, disciplinary knowledge, and
historical, cultural, and/or personal values and experience.
- Organizes materials in a way
or ways useful for the audience.
- Uses language, grammar,
punctuation, and/or other written conventions to help communicate the
required purpose(s).
A 1 response demonstrates
the following traits:
- Communicates a purpose(s) that
does not meet the needs of the audience and/or writing situation or
that does not consistently maintain the required purpose(s).
- Uses appeals or supporting
information in ways that fail to satisfy the required purpose(s).
- Organizes materials in ways
that prevent readers from engaging with the required purpose(s).
- Uses language, grammar,
punctuation, and/or other written conventions to significantly and
consistently distract readers from the overall purpose(s).
A 0 response:
- Fails to communicate a
purpose, or utterly fails to meet the needs of the audience and/or
writing situation.
