The Sophomore Survey was designed to reveal student development and learning at the time of transition from university core curriculum classes to the major program. From 2001 through 2004 the survey was administered each spring to all sophomores who had completed between 42 and 57 credit hours.

The survey was revised in 2005 to more clearly emphasize academic goals, academic major involvement and interest, and issues related to sophomore slump. This new survey (STARS) was first administered in Spring 2005. STARS is now mailed to sophomores each fall semester.
