History
In 1983, the American Sign Language Club's original
name was simply 'Sign Language Club'. Back when the club first started,
the general focus was to promote sign language. Sign Language Club included
ASL, Pidgin, Signed Exact English, and any other manual communication. One
of the founders of Sign Language Club was Jim Frenchik.
Later, Sign Language Club changed its name to 'American
Sign Language Club' in order to change its focus from just sign language
to specifically American Sign Language. Another added purpose of the club
was to inform individuals (students, faculty, and the community) about the
Deaf culture and its unique visual language (ASL). This is the mission of
our club today.
