Science Concept: There are different types of instruments to predict to rain, snow, sleet, fog, hail, etc. Objective: *Students will be able to develop a rain gauge to predict the inches of rain. *Students will be able to explain and describe other instruments to use for different types of weather patterns. Materials: Empty 2 liter bottles Scissors Wooden/plastic Stakes Permanent markers Rulers Rubber band Safety Precautions and Rules: Try not to get marker on yourself or clothes! Be very careful when cutting materials with scissors! Follow direction from teacher before using the materials. How to Make the Rain Gauge: 1. Cut the 2-liter bottle in half. 2. With the bottom half, have students use the permanent marker and rulers to make the make the marks from to 4 inches (if bottle is larger you can make more). 3. Place the wooden stake on the back of the bottle. Use two rubber bands to hold to attach the stake to the bottle. Now you can place your rain gauge outside and wait for the rain! Remember to place it in an open area, where rain falls freely! |
