Grade Level: Kindergarten

Elements: Rhythm

Learning Objectives:

*Beat is the underlying, unchanging repeating, pulse found in most music.

*Tempo is the speed of a piece of music, either getting faster or slower.

Behavior Objectives:

*The student will demonstrate an understanding of beat by singing/speaking the rhyme and doing the hand jive on the beat; at the same time.

*The student will demonstrate an understanding of tempo by gradually getting fast or slow by doing the hand jive while singing/speaking the rhyme.

Procedures:

(Sitting)

1. The teacher will read Miss Mary Mack and teach class the words and melody by rote. (Skills: listening and reading)

2. The teacher will ask students to do the following body percussion:

Pat lap with both hands and clap

Also, have students speak the rhyme while keeping the beat. (Skills: singing and moving)

(Stand-up in Pairs)

3. The teacher will have students pair up with a partner and teach them the following hand jive:

Cross arms in front of chest, slap thighs, clap, clap your right hand against your partner's right hand, Clap, Clap your left hand against your partner's left hand, clap and Clap your right hand against your partner's right hand. (Repeat this until the end of the rhyme)

*Have students do the hand jive while singing the rhyme. (Skills: singing, moving and playing)

(Stand-up in Pairs)

4. Next, the teacher will add the rhythm sticks using the same hand jive. Explain to students that you will keep the beat while they are singing the rhyme and doing the hand-jive. The teacher will also explain to students that while keeping the beat she will gradually increase the beat. The students will have to keep the constant beat in the hand-jive. (Skills: Singing, moving, creating, listening and playing)

Evaluation:

In this lesson, I will evaluate each student by observation.

Integration:

Language Arts, I would have the students write their own rhyme using their name or someone else's name in a silly rhyme pattern to create their own rhyme poem. Also, some students may even write their own verse to this rhyme. Using this activity, I will integrate Language Arts by teaching the class the different styles and concepts for poems.
