Edrdg 400 Lesson Plan

Objective:

The student will be able to identify and pronounce short vowels

Materials:

Let's Count It Out, Jesse Bear by Nancy White Carlstom

Flashcards of sentence strips

Teach:

Explain: I will read the story Let's Count It Out, Jesse Bear and students will listen. I will show and teach all of the vowels and their sounds. Students will learn to pronounce and identify short vowels. Short vowels are words with a consonant, vowel and consonant. The vowel is usually in the middle of the word.

Model: I will show students some words from the story with short vowel sounds. I will pronounce and identify the short vowel. Here are some examples of words I will use: Fun, Hat and Ball.

Questions:

1. What are short vowels?

2. How can you identify a short vowel?

Strategy Talk: I will explain to students how to identify short vowels. In order to recognize, students must know that short vowels can be seen as consonant, vowel and consonant (sometimes another consonant will fall after the last one). I will discuss with students when pronouncing the word; they will notice a vowel in the middle of the word.

Practice: I will divide the student into two teams, pick a team captain and explain to students the activity. In this activity, I will hold in front of students sentence strip containing short vowels (You should let students know that more than one short vowel can be in a sentence). It's the team's job to work together and try to identify the short vowels. When the team has an answer, the team captain will raise their hand and wait to be call on by teacher. The team captain will identify the short vowel by speaking and pronouncing it correctly. Here are the following sentences I will use for the sentence strips:

1. My sister and I had fun playing at the park.

2. My mother bought me a jacket and it was a perfect fit.

3. The cars on the freeway are in a traffic jam.

4. Mary walked home after school.

5. Tommy saw a bird on top of the house

6. I went shopping and bought twelve hats.

7. At the zoo, we saw a seal playing with a ball.

Apply: Using the book, I will have students identify and write down the short vowels on paper. I will also have students write their own sentence for each short vowel.
